Moving with pets can be just as difficult as it is for the rest of your family. They can sense stress levels and can be affected by a change of routine. To help with your move we’ve put together a moving with pets checklist that can help you thoroughly prepare for the trip. This will definitely make moving smoother both for your family and pets.
1. Plan your move in advance
Moving animals isn’t going to be a walk in the park. Even a longtime, well-trained pet can be a challenge to move. So first and foremost, make sure you are well prepared to move an animal or beloved pet prior to the actual move. To prepare, we recommend creating checklists, researching travel requirements, contacting your vet and looking into pet relocation services.
2. Practice Traveling with Your Pet
If your pets haven’t spent much time in the car or in a crate, get some practice in before the big move. The ASCPA suggests easing pets into the habit by placing their food inside an open crate and having them eventually take meals inside a closed crate. Giving them treats and playing with them after crate time can help build positive feelings about the crate.
When moving with your pet in the car, ensure that you have all the pet eatables. You must also keep a pet travel kit which includes a blanket, a towel, your pet’s favorite toy, a comb, flea or tick repellent, medicines and sedative approved by your veterinarian, plastic bag and all other necessary utilities.
